DIY Macbook LCD repair

Background: So one day I pulled my trusty macbook out of the case and half the screen was dead. There was no visible damage to the case or the surface of the screen, just a panel that was b0rked over about 80% of its area. I thought I'd be covered by the warranty, but no luck: the friendly tech in Shibuya quoted me a repair price of about 75,000 Yen, which is more than half of what I originally paid for the whole computer. Thanks, Apple. If you find yourself in the same situation, relax: replacing an lcd is waaay easier than Apple makes it out to be ('level 2 technical repair' be damned). The real cost is about 30,000 Yen and 1 hour of your time (with tea breaks).
Disclaimer: this is meant to be informative, but if you have any doubts about it, get someone else to do it for you. It's not my fault if you break your computer!
(plastic bezel is already removed. you should turn off power, remove battery, and unplug the computer before this!

Smart-Micro USA

Remove the plastic bezel with the putty knife. Work from the inside out.

Remove screws around edge of screen. Keep track of where the screws came from.

Disconnect the display cable and iSight cable. Peel them carefully off the back of the lcd.

Cut the power cable from the lcd. Give yourself about two inches of the old lcd power cable (pink and white or pink and yellow). I left too much. Remember, you are cutting the cable from the broken lcd. Apple designed the macbook so that you have to take apart the entire computer if you want to get to the plug. Your objective is to leave enough of the old cord to solder to, but not so much that an increase in cord length of about 2 inches will cause unsightly bulging.

Position the new lcd, and cut the its power cord, again leaving about an inch or two. Check that the power cables will reached comfortably!

Check that the power cable will fit. If it does, slip some heat shrink tubing on the wire. Then strip and solder pink wire to pink wire. The remaining connection was white to yellow, which made me worry, but in the end it was ok.

Push the heat shrink tubing down over the connection and shrink it.
Reconnect the display cable and iSight cable.

Check the system is working.
OK!

Put all those screws back in and put lock tite or rubber cement on each one or they'll all fall out. It happened to a friend of mine.

Replace the bezel and you're done.
